Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous and celebrated of all artists, with paintings such as ‘The Starry Night’, ‘CafĂ© Terrace at Night’ and ‘Sunflowers’ just a small example of the paintings he is known for throughout the world. Vincent Van Gogh paintings are amongst the highest paid for paintings sought after by art lovers and art investors alike. ‘Wheatfield with Cypresses’, ‘Portrait of Dr. Gatchet’, ‘Irises’ and ‘Self-portrait without Beard’ have brought record prices in the late 20th century and his works art expected to continue skyrocketing in price in the already very busy 21st century art market. He is of course also well known for his madness, his bouts of mental illness that led him to famously cutting off his ear and suicide. But was it really suicide or was it murder?

The authors of the latest Dutch-impressionist’s biography “Van Gogh: The Life” knew they would stir controversy by disputing the widely-held belief that the artist committed suicide with a gun while painting in a French wheat field. Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, who have previously won a Pulitzer prize for their biography of American artist Jackson Pollock spent ten years researching their book and proposed the new theory, that Van Gogh was shot not be himself, but by local bullies who were a constant bane in van Gogh’s already tormented life.

Naifeh and Smith uncovered some evidence that point inconclusively, they acknowledge in the direction of manslaughter.

Their first piece of evidence is a candid and self incriminating interview with respectable partisan banker Rene Secretan given in 1956. In the interview he recalled in great detail how he and his brother had tormented the artists during their teenage years in the Auvers. As the target of bullying for much of his life, the red-headed painter – who suffered from frontal lobe epilepsy – was to suffer it as the price for having some companionship.

Their second evidence is based on rumours heard by the late art historian John Rewald in the 1930s from townspeople in Auvers old enough to remember that Van Gogh had accidentally been shot by two young boys.

Their third piece of evidence is a drawing by Vincent where he depicts a boy in a cowboy hat that the authors suspect is Rene Secretan who attended the Paris World fair in 1890 where Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show from America was a big hit. They theorized that the young Rene duly infatuated with cowboys and guns borrowed a pistol from local innkeeper Arthur Ravoux to shoot birds and small animals, and that this was the weapon that killed Vincent van Gogh. It should be noted that during the 1956 interview Rene Secretan mentioned nothing about any shooting.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which collaborated with the authors, was quoted as regarding the author’s theory as “interesting” and “spectacular” but has not yet dismissed the long-held suicide theory.

In any case, the mystery of Vincent Van Gogh’s death has begun.

Contemplative songs are not just for monks or those preparing to become one. In the first article in this series we discussed the definition of contemplative. We moved from a heavy feeling or connotation to a more uplifting meaning that includes taking action. In the second article, we expanded our possibilities of where we can look to find our inspirations. Today we identify the desired effect in the third and final installment of this three-part series.

Part III – The Desired Effect

Why would one bother to be bothered (bothered in the positive sense of the word) by a phrase, a statement, or a line of scripture? Would one want to ruminate over something simply to use up time? Unlikely. Most often when we ponder something it is to realize understanding. The understanding sometimes changes our outlook and consequently, our behavior. The desired effect then, is an improved spirit and way of interacting with our God and others. The thing is, sometimes we choose contemplation, other times it chooses us.

We may want to have the desired effect as much as possible. Yet, we must be ready for the lesson that precedes it. As we are “ready,” we are presented with new material to contemplate. Sometimes the information must be given to us many times before we are ready to be truly and lastingly changed. This is deep work and not the kind that can be rushed. Be patient for the outcome and gentle with yourself.

If you take the contemplations as they come and do not actively seek out a concept to learn, you may have noticed the appearance of your lessons are sporadic and yet, timely. As you are going through something in your life you may notice a familiar theme that has shown itself before on one or many occasions. This time it feels different. It feels that it is time to think deeply upon it, and now absorb it.

Others of you are more deliberate. You schedule time regularly for contemplation. You are targeting goals you have for your development. For example, you would like to be more compassionate or perhaps more generous. You seek out songs, scripture, books, videos, and experiences in order to reach your goal. Be careful. Regular time for our God is good. But make sure you are letting God do the leading. Do not make your spiritual development an exercise of intellectualism. The desired effect is authored by the Divine. Seldom if ever are re-writes on God’s work as fruitful as God’s.

Tips for First-Time Christian Authors

Being a writer is in my blood. My dad is a writer and has authored several books. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and I have a pretty good background in writing. I have designed several training program manuals and other corporate communication materials. However, my gift in writing reached its full potential after I got reborn. I just could not stop writing about my experiences as a changed person as well as revelations I was receiving from God.

I was a motivational speaker and trainer before I got reborn. I have conducted so many seminars and training programs that developed not only my speaking ability but also my skills in organizing my thoughts, which is a very crucial factor in writing and speaking. This public speaking continued even after I got reborn. From secular teachings I moved to Biblical teachings, incorporating them even in my secular engagements. This opened doors for me for women’s conferences. And this is where I expressed all the writings I’ve done and continued to do.

In one of my women’s conferences, which happened to be on my birthday, I invited my parents. It was a birthday gift I asked from them… for them to be there to witness their daughter. I invited them for the sole purpose of sharing the Word of God to them (they are devout Catholics, by the way). My dad was so impressed with me (I used to work with and for him back in the days. He was a very good and highly respected public speaker in the Philippines). He was the one who suggested that I make a book out of that women’s conference.

God used my dad to plant that seed in me. I knew he was right but I just didn’t know where to start. Those were my financially trying days because I was already in full-time ministry. One night, as I was looking for some online part-time job, I realized I haven’t found anything after an hour. The Holy Spirit then spoke to me and said, “Had you spent your time writing your book, you would have gotten somewhere by now. That book will help you financially”. I was jolted that night and I finally started writing. I couldn’t stop writing, I mean typing. I brought my laptop with me everywhere, even in the bathroom. I typed and typed and typed and typed and after three months I was done with my first draft. At that same time, my “editor” friend who I haven’t talked to in a while came back to my life. I told her about my book and she offered to edit it for free. We did at least five proof readings, as far as I can remember.

There is one thing you have to understand about being an author or writing a book. Back in the days, if you have a manuscript, all you have to do is submit it to a publishing company and once they like it, they will do all the works for you and you will be paid royalties for the sales of your books. Nowadays it is totally different. You have so many options in your hands. There is no more publisher out there, unless you are already a famous author or somebody renowned, who will review your manuscript for you for free. You have to pay even for the review of your manuscript, without the guarantee that it will even be accepted.

There are companies who offer “self-publishing” in different packages. There are packages that include only printing, ISBN (this is the code you need so you can sell your book in bookstores), copyright; others include all other works such as editing/proofreading, book cover, and marketing. It depends on how much you can really afford. For my first book, I chose to do everything on my own, except for the printing of the books.

I was privileged and blessed at that time to have a volunteer worker in ministry who was very good in graphics design. She did my layout and book cover for free. Can you imagine that??? I had an editor and graphics designer for free. God is good!

I had no clue where to find anyone who can print my books, let alone the money to pay for it. I had really nothing. I was operating by faith. I then went to my mom and asked her if she knows anyone who can print my books and if I can borrow money from her in exchange for my jewelries. She then told me that she knows a guy in church who owns a printing press but she is not sure whether he does books. Then she offered me the best deal ever for my financial concern. They had an office rental that needed a tenant. She told me that I can have the full one month if I help advertise for her. I didn’t waste time. I started promoting her rental and in a week she had a tenant. I finally had the money to spend for the printing of my books.

Then I went to see the printer that my mom referred to me and told him about my concern. Since he knows my mom and he is a godly man, he offered me the best deal ever. I got my 1000 copies printed at a very, unbelievable price.

The next hurdle that I had to cross was the book promotion, which is not an easy task. The making of the book is just one part; the promotion is another major part. I did conferences, promoted online, gave books for free, called up all my family and friends, and all other promotional means available. I utilized whatever free promotions I could.

So if you are an aspiring Christian author, here is my advice…

1. Be sure it is God who is leading you to write. When He tells you to write, you better start it.

2. Don’t worry about money. Just write. He will provide every step of the way.

3. Research. I did everything on my own and I self-published my 2nd book on my 1st year in this country. I hardly knew anyone then but I did my research.

4. Be resourceful. There are so many free ways to promote your book once you already have it.

5. Don’t make “money” your goal. Your objective is to get the message out there. Let God take care of providing for you.
